Post Crescent Letter to the Editor
I am writing in regards to the March 13 article “Money from Minnesota flows into Appleton council race.” We are one of the families who willingly, without being solicited, donated to Maiyoua Thao’s Appleton City Council Campaign.
I was fortunate to get to know Maiyoua through the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce Leadership Fox Cities program almost 10 years ago. I was immediately impressed with her leadership, community involvement, and passion for making Appleton a better place for all. She recognized needs within the Hmong community, and has started multiple businesses to help meet these needs.
When I heard Maiyoua was running for city council, I immediately contacted her to ask how I could help! Not only because I had the honor of calling her friend, but also because I saw the impact she made in our community, especially for the Hmong families who call the Fox Valley home. Like many other people, we stepped up to support Maiyoua willingly, and without being solicited, because she had impacted my life. From Maiyoua, I learned about the way Hmong families support one another, and the enthusiasm for her campaign and the donations received represent the rich fabric of community in the Fox Valley and beyond that Maiyoua has helped create.
I was disappointed that this article did not accurately represent the fact that Maiyoua didn’t solicit the majority of donations received, they were given willingly by people like me who not only support Maiyoua, but also having our local government accurately represent our entire community. I believe the incredible outpouring of support for her campaign, including money received, represents the enthusiasm for having Maiyoua Thao represent District 7 on our city council.
