Business Entrepreneur & Community Leader Maiyoua Thao Announces Candidacy for Appleton Common Council


APPLETON-- Maiyoua Thao of Appleton filed signatures on Monday for candidacy for Appleton’s Common Council in District 7. Thao is a prolific business woman who owns and operates several successful companies in Appleton including; Thao Enterprises (where she is CEO and President), Long Cheng Marketplace and Tongxeng Personal Homecare where she employs over 300 staff in the home care and personal services field.

Thao is the city’s first female Hmong candidate for the office. Her family relocated to the United States in 1988. She attended Appleton East High School and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Human Services and Economic Development and a Masters Degree in Professional Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Thao hopes to bring her sound business acumen, fiscal responsibility and experience in strategic economic growth to the Council as well as provide a productive link between the city and its Hmong American residents. “As a community leader I look forward to the opportunity to serve by bringing my breadth of business knowledge and fiscal responsibility to enhance the quality of life for District 7 and all of Appleton residents,” said Thao.

A recognized community and business leader, Thao was a two-time nominee for the Jane LaChapella McCarthy Unity in Diversity Award and a recipient of the Wisconsin Department of Commerce and Wisconsin Minority Business Good Citizen Award. She is a Leadership Fox Cities graduate, served on the Board of Directors for Kaleidoscope Academy. Thao is also an active member of the Hmong American Partnership, and Wisconsin Hmong Chamber of Commerce.

A campaign kick off event for Thao will be held at Long Cheng Marketplace - 1804 S. Lawe Street, Appleton, Wisconsin - on Sunday, January 13th, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity for the community to meet and greet Thao. The community is encouraged to attend.
